Practical AI literacy is small checks before action.

Contrast the two tools:

  • Spreadsheet formula: inputs are cells you can see; process is written; output is recalculated when inputs change
  • AI grade predictor: inputs may include past scores, attendance, or hidden signals; process is opaque; output is a forecast that can be wrong even when it looks neat

Both can help. Only one is easy to verify. Honest labeling matters: a formula is usually not AI. A predictor might be. Either way, check before trusting.

Use these habits on school tools:

  1. Show your work — Can you see inputs and the rule, or only a verdict?
  2. Spot-check known cases — Enter a tiny fake row where you already know the answer. Does the tool match?
  3. Ask what would change the output — If one quiz score flips, does the number move in a sensible way?
  4. Separate describe vs decide — “The predictor says 7” describes a model output. “I will skip studying” is a human decision.
  5. Pause on high stakes — Report cards, group placement, and eligibility need stronger checks than a practice forecast.

These habits also work on feeds, chatbots, scanners, and photo tags.

Try it: two-minute audit

Open or sketch a grades sheet with three quiz columns and an average formula. Write the formula in plain words.

Then imagine the AI predictor returns “likely 7” while your visible average is lower. List three questions you would ask before believing the predictor. Keep them concrete: data used, date of last update, whether missing homework counts, who can override.

If you cannot answer those questions, your habit is: do not treat the forecast as a grade.

Weak: “Trust AI grades.” Better: “Some tools predict. Predictions need a check against work you can see.” Also better: “A spreadsheet formula shows its steps. Demand steps before big decisions.”

Your course case is a hallway poster about honest AI labels. Habits belong on that poster because a wrong label trains classmates to skip checks.
