Pause before you paste the group chat

Before any AI box gets your clipboard, ask three questions:

1. Whose info is in here? Yours, a friend’s, a teacher’s, a sibling’s?
2. What exact help do I need? Tone? Outline? One confusing paragraph?
3. What can I delete and still get help?

Most of the time you only need: “We disagree about who does the poster. Help me write a polite message that suggests a fair split.” No names required. No phone numbers. No grades.

The pause is not paranoia. Chats hold birthday plans, home addresses for carpools, medical excuses, and private jokes that were never meant for a tool’s history.

• Count to five with the paste dialog open.
• Paste into a notes app first, scrub, then copy the clean version.
• Prefer typing a summary over dumping a scrollback.

If you wouldn’t post the raw thread on a public story, don’t casually feed it to a chatbot either.

Group chats are dense. In five seconds you can spot a phone number, a home address for hangouts, a screenshot of a quiz, or a mean joke that becomes cruel out of context. AI does not need that whole ecosystem to help you write a calm reply.

Try a “purpose paste”: write the purpose first (“tone help for a conflict about poster tasks”), then add only the minimum facts. If you cannot state the purpose, you are not ready to paste.

Parents and teachers care about this habit because one leak can hurt friendships. Your pause protects people who never agreed to be in your chatbot history.

Move the AI tab to a different screen space from the chat app. Friction helps. Or keep a notes file called scrubbed-prompts where every AI request must live for ten seconds before sending. Tiny friction beats giant regret.
