Safe sharing checklist

Run through this before pasting anything into a chatbot — especially work, school, or health info.

Run through this before pasting anything into a chatbot — especially work, school, or health info.

Before you paste

  • Would I say this in a **public forum**? If no, think twice.
  • Did I **remove names, IDs, passwords, API keys**?
  • Is this **someone else's private data** (customer, student, patient)?
  • Am I on a **work account** with logging/retention policies?
  • Could this text **identify me or my company** if leaked?

Safer alternatives

  • Replace real names with "Person A," redact account numbers
  • Summarize the situation instead of dumping raw emails
  • Use **local/offline tools** for highly sensitive drafts
  • Ask IT which **approved AI tools** your org allows

After you get an answer

  • Don't treat output as confidential storage — copy what you need, delete the thread if policy requires
  • Verify facts before acting (see **Verify AI answers** cheatsheet)
