Narrow AI

AI that excels at **one task or domain** — spam filtering, chess, speech-to-text — without general human-like reasoning across everything.
When to use
Setting realistic expectations: today's chatbots and vision models are powerful but still narrow compared to sci-fi "general AI."
When not to
Don't assume narrow means useless — specialized models often beat general ones on specific jobs like code completion or medical imaging.
Example
A model that reads X-rays well cannot automatically run your company's payroll — different training, data, and safety requirements.
